Sleeping Arrangements- What’s Best for your New Puppy?

Congratulations on welcoming a new member of the family! There are going to be many exciting times ahead, but for now it’s crucial to take those first steps with your new puppy and their sleeping arrangements.

Here at Pets & Friends, we’ve put together a quick summary of the different sleeping arrangements which can help your new pup feel safe and secure during those first few nights.

One thing to remember when settling in your puppy, whether they’re in a crate, bed or on a mattress is to make sure your puppy’s bed is in a quiet area of your house, so that they won’t get disturbed or distracted during the night.

Don’t forget the puppy pads either! Accidents will happen, so until your pup is fully toilet trained, it’s also a good idea to put down pads and waterproof covers across the floor underneath where they sleep.

A Bed

First things first, an easily accessible, puppy sized bed is ideal for your new arrival. Cushioned beds provide a relaxing and soft place to help them relax after a long day of playtime and walkies.

A dog bed will also keep your puppy warm, not only helping them feel secure in their new home, but if they’re sleeping downstairs- can be crucial during those winter months.

A Crate

If you plan on using a dog crate for your new family member, turning it into a comfy, inviting safe space will help them feel settled. You can place your dog bed or mattress directly into the crate, adding warmth and cushioning to their new area.

An advantage of using a dog crate means that, eventually, you can move the crate around your home to suit your needs, finding the ideal spot for your dog to sleep at different stages of their life (or different seasons!) and they will always have their safe space.

Whichever option you choose for your new pup, just like us humans, they sleep better when they are relaxed, comfortable and feel secure. If we as pet parents know they’re sleeping well, we might just get some sleep on those first nights too!
